United Nations Millennium Development Goals Review Summit

In September 2010, the United Nations General Assembly convened at the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) Review Summit in New York. The MDGs serve as a strategy for the alleviation of poverty worldwide by 2015 and were agreed upon at the 2000 UN Millennium Summit. With five years left until the 2015 deadline, world leaders gathered in New York to assess how close we are to meeting these goals.

This year's MDG Review Summit was held the week after Stand Up! Take Action!, a weekend in which people around the world stand up to show leaders their support for the MDGs. That weekend, our members and supporters called on President Obama to put an end to unjust debt practices in over 100 events across the country.

On September 23rd, the President spoke at the UN MDG Review Summit outlining his commitments to the goals. Click here to read Obama’s response to global cries for economic justice.

STAND UP AND TAKE ACTION AGAINST DEBT & GLOBAL POVERTY!

September 17th -19th, 2010

When world leaders gather at the United Nations for the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) Review Summit in September, the voices of their citizens will follow them, telling them, loudly and clearly: “We will no longer stay seated or silent in the face of poverty and the broken promises to end it!"

SAVE THE DATE to join millions of people worldwide in the biggest ever global day of action against poverty.  Last year 173 million people stood up to demand that world leaders keep their promises to end poverty and inequality. Once again this year Jubilee USA will join with the UN Millennium Campaign to hold our leaders accountable.

WHY STAND UP?
In the year 2000, leaders of 189 countries signed the Millennium Declaration, committing to do everything in their power to end poverty.  World leaders also established a roadmap to significantly alleviate extreme poverty by 2015 – the Millennium Development Goals.

With only five years left, we must urge our leaders to stay true to their commitments. On Stand Up Weekend, President Obama will make a speech in New York City outlining his commitments to the goals. Throughout 2010, Jubilee USA has been mobilizing to ensure expanded debt cancellation is part of his plan of action.

The gap between the rich and the poor is growing – at least 53 million additional people have been forced into poverty due to the global economic crisis.  Meanwhile, the world’s poorest countries send $100 million every day in debt repayment to the world’s richest countries and financial institutions.  We have the power to change this!

HOW TO STAND UP AND TAKE ACTION
No matter where you’ll be on September 17-19th, it’s possible to plan a STAND UP.  STAND UP in your class, at a potluck dinner or party, even at work.  This year organize an event in your community - big or small. Gather your friends, family, or faith community and stand together. DOWNLOAD MATERIALS HERE:
