CALL YOUR SENATORS TODAY! ASK THEM TO SUPPORT PASSAGE OF THE JUBILEE ACT (S 2166) BY UNANIMOUS CONSENT

1.      Call the Capitol switchboard at 202-224-3121.

2.      Ask the Capitol operator to connect you with your Senator’s office.  If you don’t know who your Senators are, tell her what state you’re from.  Be sure to call both of your US Senators!

3.      Once you are connected with the office, the receptionist will answer. Introduce yourself as (your name), a constituent from (city, state).  Ask to speak with the staff person who handles international financial issues.  

4.      You will be connected with the staff person (or their voicemail). Say: 

“I am calling to urge Senator ________ to support the Jubilee Act (S. 2166), which was passed by the House in April and passed by the Senate Foreign Relations Committee in June.  The Jubilee Act has bipartisan support and would expand debt cancellation to 24 additional impoverished countries, provided they meet criteria to ensure that the money is used for poverty reduction. It is up for consideration by unanimous consent in the Senate.  Do you know Senator  _________'s position on the Jubilee Act?”

(You can stop there, or add an additional sentence about why this issue is important to you).

5. Be sure to thank the staffer when you are finished.  If they don’t know the Senator’s position, arrange a time to call back to find out whether the Senator will support the bill.

6. Email Kristin with the results of your call at Kristin(at)jubileeusa.org. This will enable us to register your Senator’s support/opposition and follow up with the office if necessary.
