Now that the Jubilee year 2000 has passed, you may be asking yourself, "What happens next?" Is the biblical Jubilee intended to be an occasional event, enacted once every 50 years? Is debt relief the end of our obligation or just the beginning of the journey for God's people? Have we gotten to the heart of the Jubilee message?
Many Bible passages yield surprising new meanings when viewed through Jubilee lenses, and these passages speak with remarkable relevance to what might be called the greatest concern that humankind will have to resolve in this new century, the unprecedented concentration of wealth and the deepening of poverty in every region. We might well ask ourselves, "What is Jesus' message, his Jubilee message, for this new century?"
