Current Actions

On March 24, Jubilee USA and nearly 80 faith communities and national religious and development organizations filed an Amicus (friend of the court) brief to the United States Supreme Court in the landmark debt case between Argentina and predatory hedge funds.  The brief expresses deep concern for the potential impact of this case on the world's poorest people.  The hedge funds involved in this case are participating in predatory behavior that targets the debt relief funds otherwise earmarked to benefit those living in extreme poverty.  The brief notes:

"Using law to dispossess the poor for the pleasure of the powerful offends not only the sense of justice embodied in United States policy, but the even more ancient principles of biblical justice revealed in the scriptures of our faiths."

Please add your voices to our Supreme Court filing and sign the petition below.  We need Congress to pass legislation that protects the poor, US bipartisan debt policy and out global economy from extreme predatory behavior.

In the months after Typhoon Haiyan devastated the Philippines, the world has responded with astounding generosity, donating hundreds of millions of dollars to aid in the recovery effort and pledging hundreds of millions more.

Yet in its struggle to respond to the disaster, the Philippine government is still on the hook for billions of dollars in debt repayments. In fact, since the typhoon struck on November 8, 2013, the Philippines has spent between $6 billion and $8 billion paying off overseas debts.

Write your Senators to Cosponsor the Stop Tax Haven Abuse Act.

Thanks to Senators Levin, Whitehouse, Begich and Shaheen, we've introduced the Stop Tax Haven Abuse Act - S.1533. This is a companion piece to the House of Representatives bill introduced in April.

This legislation addresses a systemic cause of poverty - the fact that many multinational corporations don't pay taxes to the developing governments that need the revenue most. Between 2000 and 2008, $6.5 trillion left the developing world completely untaxed. If this money would have been taxed modestly, we wouldn't be facing a global debt crisis and there would be better access to food in the poorest countries. Poor countries become trapped in cycles of borrowing because corporations keep more profits for themselves by avoiding paying taxes in these countries. A key way this legislation curbs tax avoidance is by requiring country-by-country reporting of corporate payments to governments.

The Senate bill includes specific provisions to combat offshore tax abuses. This is good legislation that also has positive impacts for us in the United States, curbs corruption globally and gives us the information we need to start addressing global corporate tax avoidance.

When you write your Senators to cosponsor the Stop Tax Haven Abuse Act - S. 1533, you join a global voice that believes the chains of poverty should be broken.

This building is a well-known tax haven called the Ugland House in the Cayman Islands that houses 18,857 registered businesses.

Take action and tell your Senators and Representative to support legislative measures for responsible lending and borrowing. Such measures would benefit the world's poorest and most vulnerable. The U.S. government can implement concrete principles of responsible lending and borrowing to promote democracy, combat corruption and ensure sustainable development for the Global South.

Please send a message right now to your Senate and House Members telling them to support legislative measures for responsible lending and borrowing at the IMF, World Bank and other International Financial Institutions.

The U.S. is the world's single largest financier of the developing world and the largest contributor to the IMF and the World Bank. Jubilee USA is moving the U.S. government because of its tremendous leverage in promoting responsible lending and borrowing practices. Because of the efforts of Jubilee USA, the U.S. government has endorsed the voluntary principles of responsible lending and borrowing that were developed by the United Nations. We need to ensure that future loans to low-income countries are beneficial, contracted transparently, are repayable and are supported by the citizens of those countries. We are mobilizing our members across the country to urge Members of Congress to support legislative measures for responsible lending and borrowing.

Debt Justice for Zimbabwe

Jubilee USA and our counterparts at the Zimbabwe Coalition on Debt and Development (ZIMCODD) are calling for a debt audit to uncover the origins of $7 billion of  Zimbabwe's debt.  Send an email to Donald Kaberuka, the President of the African Development Bank and ask him to support a democratic audit of Zimbabwe's debts.
