Jubilee Statement on Student Loan Interest Rate Passage in Congress
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
June 29th, 2012
WASHINGTON, DC - Jubilee USA Network Executive Director, Eric LeCompte, releases the following statement on the House and Senate Passage of legislation to extend low interest rates on Stafford student loans:
"It's rare in Washington to celebrate true bipartisanship - we can today, as Congress acted to promote college affordability and protect low-interest college loans. We are grateful to President Obama's leadership and to all of the Republicans and Democrats who reached across the aisle and got this done."
Over the past two months, Jubilee USA Network organized thousands of Catholics, Evangelicals, Episcopalians, Presbyterians, Lutherans and other people of faith to educate moderate and conservative Members of Congress on protecting student loans. Last weekend, ahead of these votes - more than 40 religious congregations across the United States prayed and acted for students, delivered petitions and encouraged their Members of Congress to stop Stafford student loan interest rates from rising.
Jubilee USA Network is an alliance of more than 75 US organizations, 200 faith communities and 50 Jubilee global partners. Jubilee USA Network has won critical global financial reforms and more than 100 billion dollars in debt relief for the world's poorest countries. With the international debt crisis spreading into the United States, Jubilee USA recognizes that we must make connections between unsustainable debts that hurt our local and global communities.
