In the Jubilee Year as described in the Hebrew Scriptures, the book of Leviticus, those enslaved by debt are freed, lands lost because of debt are returned and communities torn by inequality are restored.
Recognizing the critical role that religious communities have played and continue to play in social justice movements and the strong involvement of congregations in the work of debt cancellation, the Jubilee USA Network is deeply committed to working with and through faith communities. The Jubilee Congregation Program is an outgrowth of this commitment. It began with discussions in a Jubilee Group in Colorado about strategies to involve local churches at the grassroots.
Today, this church-based effort has grown into a national, ecumenical, interfaith network. Still in its nascent stage, this emerging network is expanding weekly and expects to include several hundred congregations in the near future.
