Friends,
As the dust settles on the election, four of our strategic campaigns will likely see action before year end. The current Congress, White House, Puerto Rico authorities and the G20 will be moving decisions on our campaigns and we need your help.
Over the last year we convened a process with national interfaith religious partners on trade, debt and access to medicines in the lead-up to NAFTA negotiations. The work resulted in a powerful statement and advocacy tool that pushed the White House and Congress. We met with the White House, Republican and Democratic leadership and the US Trade Representative. Around the country our Jubilee synagogues, churches, temples and congregations are endorsing the statement. Already the heads of the Lutheran, Catholic, Presbyterian, Episcopalian, Methodist and United Church of Christ Churches signed the statement.
Your support achieves results.
In the new NAFTA, we have agreement to stop vulture funds collecting on old debt, now we need your help to ensure that vulnerable people can access life-saving medicines.
While our campaign moves forward on NAFTA, trade, debt and access to medicines - three more of our efforts are in front of policy makers. The G20 will make decisions on responsible lending and our Jubilee small island debt relief process over the coming weeks and months. Congress will make decisions on Puerto Rico rebuilding aid and the next phase of the island's debt restructuring will be decided by Puerto Rico's Senate, Governor and oversight board. With our partners in Puerto Rico, we will need your help as we move Congress this year to fulfill the aid amounts Puerto Rico needs and as we push to cut the debt and stop austerity policies.
Over the last six months, our multi-year campaigns successfully pushed the IMF to acknowledge a new debt crisis in Africa and raise concerns that protections are not in place to prevent the next financial crisis. At the Annual IMF and World Bank Meetings held in Indonesia a few weeks ago, we held high-level events and publicly addressed all of the decision makers of the IMF on our efforts. During the meetings, our IMF work was covered in news outlets spanning Africa and Asia and featured in television and print in the BBC News and the Wall Street Journal.
Recently an important global leader told me that given Jubilee USA's impressive and effective impact we must have at least 25 staff people. He was stunned when I told him we have less than four full time staff.
Your gift is needed, appreciated and makes a very very big impact.
So grateful for your partnership,
Eric LeCompte
